Discourse marker use in task-oriented spoken dialog \lambda

چکیده
Discourse markers, also known as clue words, are used extensively in human-human task-oriented dialogs to signal the structure of the discourse. Previous work showed their importance in monologs and social conversations for marking discourse structure , but little attention has been paid to their importance in spoken dialog systems. This paper investigates what discourse markers signal about the upcoming speech, and when they tend to be used in task-oriented dialog. We demonstrate that there is a high correlation between speciic discourse markers and speciic conversational moves, between discourse marker use and adjacency pairs, and between discourse markers and the speaker's orientation to information presented in the prior turn. We limit our analysis to turn-initial discourse markers and discover new patterns in their interaction with phenomena speciic to dialog.

Ravenclaw: dialog management using hierarchical task decomposition and an expectation agenda
We describe RavenClaw, a new dialog management framework developed as a successor to the Agenda [1] architecture used in the CMU Communicator. RavenClaw introduces a clear separation between task and discourse behavior specification, and allows rapid development of dialog management components for spoken dialog systems operating in complex, goal-oriented domains. The system development effort i...
متن کاملDeveloping extensible and reusable spoken dialogue components: an examination of the Queen's communicator
This paper presents an examination of the Queen’s Communicator, a cross-domain, mixed initiative spoken dialogue system, in terms of the system’s extensibility and reusability. The paper explores how an object-oriented design methodology can be used to define both high-level discourse objects and appropriate forms of relationship between discourse objects. The paper concludes that the applicati...
متن کاملA rule based approach to extraction of topics and dialog acts in a spoken dialog system
This paper presents a rule based approach to extraction of dialog acts and topics from utterances in a spoken dialog system, SDSKIT-3, with a task-independent dialog controller which is based on an extension of the framedriven method. We demonstrated it could control dialogs in several different task domains, only given a set of topic frames and a set of rules manually designed for the discours...
متن کاملIdentifying Discourse Markers in Spoken Dialog
In this paper, we present a method for identifying discourse marker usage in spontaneous speech based on machine learning. Discourse markers are denoted by special POS tags, and thus the process of POS tagging can be used to identify discourse markers. By incorporating POS tagging into language modeling, discourse markers can be identified during speech recognition, in which the timeliness of t...
متن کاملPredicting Tasks in Goal-Oriented Spoken Dialog Systems using Semantic Knowledge Bases
Goal-oriented dialog agents are expected to recognize user-intentions from an utterance and execute appropriate tasks. Typically, such systems use a semantic parser to solve this problem. However, semantic parsers could fail if user utterances contain out-of-grammar words/phrases or if the semantics of uttered phrases did not match the parser’s expectations. In this work, we have explored a mor...
